The Mystery of Melchizedek

By: L. Campbell Evans

   Enshrouded in the hidden mysteries of God to be revealed in the last days is the person of Melchizedek.  Over the centuries, many have expounded upon their 'thoughts', unwittingly challenging the validity of the Word of God and bringing confusion to the body of Christ.  Through the centuries, great scholars and men of renown have declared the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God, divinely inspired of the Holy Spirit, and yet when it comes to the person of Melchizedek, they say that the Holy Spirit did not mean what He said.  Some have gone so far to say that the He made a mistake when it comes to this man SUDDENLY appearing and disappearing from the scene!  After all, all men have a mother and a father with the exception of the first man Adam who was created by our heavenly Father.  Even Adam had a beginning, therefore this man had to have a beginning!  And there must have been a priesthood that we were not told about that God had established before that of Aaron.

   Clues run throughout the scripture as to who this man was and the first thing that we have to settle in our hearts is the Holy Spirit says exactly what He means.  The scriptures written are clear, concise and without error!!   Those who were used had a pen of a ready writer,  "... holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" 1Pet. 1:21.  And the Word of God tells us that "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" 1Tim. 3:16.  That which became a mystery to man as a result of his own wisdom (natural carnal thinking), was never to be a mystery at all.  Melchizedek was not a mystery to the early church nor to the writer of Hebrews for he declared through the illumination of the Holy Spirit in Heb. 6:20 "Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec".

   According to Hebrews 1:3 Jesus is the very express image of the person of God.  And when we consider that He is the Word of God according to John 1:1-4 and verse 14, and He has been exalted to the highest position in the Universe next to the Father, the question immediately arises, could Jesus be AFTER THE ORDER OF instead of BEFORE THE ORDER OF?!!  How could there be an order of ministry which would set a pattern for the Son of God?  The Word of God has much to say about the person, divinity, and deity of Jesus, but let us just consider the following three scriptures:

   Hebrews 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

   Revelation 1:8-9 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

   Philippians 2:10-11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

    Many have theorized that Melchizedek was a manifestation of Jesus (a Christophonie, i.e. an appearance of).  Yet if we are to search the scriptures, we would begin to find several reasons why this were not so.  Six times in the book of Hebrews, Melchizedek is mentioned.

   Hebrews 7:1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

   Genesis 14:18-19 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

    The first place that we see Melchisedec is in the Old Testament greeting Abraham as he returned victoriously from the war with Chedorlaomer.  Although Abram had already been blessed by the Father, this man blessed him once again.  It is interesting to note here that Melchisedec brought forth bread and wine which speaks of communion.  The next place that we are aware of communion taking place is with Jesus and his disciples.  The same communion which was set forth for the church by the Apostle Paul in Corinthians.

   Hebrews 7:2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;  Here we see Melchisedec as the King of Righteousness and King of Salem (Peace), whereas Jesus is the Son of Righteousness (Malachi 4:2) and the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6 )!

   Hebrews 7:3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Here we see that this person didn't have parents whereas Jesus had a Father (God) and a mother (Mary)!  AND this person was LIKE UNTO (resembling, having a resemblance to, like) the Son without beginning or end of days, without end of life, and he had a priesthood which was CONTINUAL (perpetual).

Hebrews 7:3 Without Father, without Mother, without genealogy, having Neither Beginning of days nor End of Life, but Resembling the Son of God, He (Melchisedec) remains a Priest Forever. (NRSV)

   Hebrews 7:15-16  And it is yet far more evident: for that after the Similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth ANOTHER PRIEST (Jesus!) Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but AFTER the Power of an Endless Life.  It is clear from this scripture that Jesus is similar to but different than Melchisedec! Jesus is ANOTHER PRIEST made like as Melchisedec. The work similitude is from the G3665 homoiotes which means resemblance, like as, or similitude and G3664 homoios which means similar in appearance or character like manner.  They are very much alike but not the same.  They are two different persons!

     So we have see that this person has the power to bless, Abram gave his tithes to him and Levi paid tithes to him in Abraham! Hebrews 7:9-10 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, paid tithes in Abraham. For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him!

     Hebrews 7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?  What an awesome statement!  JESUS WAS NOT CALLED after the order of Aaron but WAS CALLED AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHISEDEC!  Why????  Only in understanding who Melchizedek was will we be able to know the answer!

   Consider who this priest was!!!  He blessed, received tithes, had no beginning nor end of days, no father, no mother, King of Salem (Peace) and King of Righteousness, brought bread and wine and his priesthood is unchanging and eternal!!!!! And SIX time the scriptures state that the Lord Jesus Christ is AFTER THE ORDER OF!  May I say at this point that this man was not an ordinary man!  There is not a record of his birth nor his death, nor is there a record of genealogy.  Is it possible that this man was not a man at all?  Who could be higher than Jesus?

     There is only ONE higher than our King of kings and Lord of lords.  Only ONE that Jesus would consider above himself!  Only ONE that the Holy Spirit would declare to be so. Only ONE that could set a standard for Jesus to be patterned AFTER!  And that would be the FATHER!  The Melchizedek priesthood is truly that which is eternal and has the power of endless life.  Unlike the Aaronic priesthood that changed from generation through generation through death, this Melchisedec had NOT tasted death!.  And it was not until Jesus walked through the portals of death and ascended victorious that He was crowned King of kings and Lord of lords (the Head over those who would come) that His ministry was established AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK (The Father).

   When Father God called Abram, he was a heathen! He didn't know God, had never had contact with Him and he worshipped idols!!  And to top it all off, there were people in the earth who KNEW God!  The descendants of Noah, that remnant that God delivered through the FLOOD!  But He called a heathen!  Now that will really set the religious folk on their ear!  God was about to raise up a SEED that would come by promise!

   Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

   Imagine leaving all you have, your relatives and taking off to a place that you have not seen yet!  And as you know, Abram left all except for Lot (he took him with him), and headed out. It wasn't until Lot had separated himself from Abram, that the Lord showed him the land that He would give to him.  A land that was a far as he could see to the north, south, east, and west.  But remember in the verses that God said "I WILL BLESS THEE"?  Meaning that the blessing would come but was not yet!  And who blessed Abram?  It was MELCHIZEDEC!  The only one that had the power to place the blessing that God had for Abram was God Himself!  And when He blessed him, he and his wife produced the promised son!

   Melchisedec came to minister to Abram the FIRST COMMUNION which would not be served again until when Jesus served it to His disciples!  Father Himself established and common union between God and man which would never be broken.  A COVENANT which would come and be sealed through the finished work of the cross!  Abraham and Melchizedek partook TOGETHER of the blood and body of Jesus Christ which was to come, yet it was established then!  and they ate and drank together, King Melchisedec and Abraham and there was a reason for it.  Just as surely as the Lamb was slain before the foundation of the world, so the body was broken, the blood was shed, and Abram partook!  Melchisedec transferred His Seed (Bread is grain, i.e. seed and oil) through this blessed time of communion with Abraham and he was the chosen of God to bring forth the seed of the promised Son.

Galatians 3:14-16 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. Now to Abraham and HIS SEED were the promises made. He saith not , And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to THY SEED, WHICH IS CHRIST!

   The Most High God appeared as Melchisedec in the Flesh to Abraham and blessed HIS SEED which was to come, and all those who would be in and through that SINGLE SEED!  The SEED OF THE FATHER!  Symbolically, when partake of the Body & Blood of Jesus is when we accept him as our Savior. Then we have the Hidden Manna, the Holy Seed within us!

   Galatians 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, TILL THE SEED SHOULD COME TO WHOM THE PROMISE WAS MADE; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

   It was the SEED who would come that received the promise and it was made to that SEED in Abraham! Not the natural descendants, but those who would come by promise through Christ!  Not a seed of flesh but a seed of Spirit!  An eternal seed without end!  Like Father, like Son, a royal priesthood, a Melchisedec order in the Son, kings and priests unto God the Father!  Melchisedec was a King and Priest!  Coincidence?  Not hardly!

   Galatians 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

   Yes, although Melchisedec and Jesus are alike in many so many ways, it is quite obvious that they are not the same, rather one established and the other AROSE to that order.  Let us always remember that the Father can do as He pleases and if He wanted to establish a priesthood that was established in Spirit and not flesh, let us praise Him for it.  A ministry with the outflowing of bread and wine, eternal with the power of endless life!  For it is a ministry without prejudice, without condemnation, without fleshly works, without death, without idolatry, without profanity, without walls, without retaliation, without change!

   Hebrews 8:6 But now hath he (Jesus) obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

   Yes, Jesus obtained it and revealed to us what the Father had purposed in His heart from the beginning.  Servitude!  Father has been serving us all along!

   O Father, open our eyes and we shall see; open our ears and we shall hear; open our hearts and we shall know and understand.  Let your SEED spring forth within us and come to full bloom and the fragrance of your love, your grace, your mercy, and your goodness be released.  Rain upon us that we may be a wellspring of Life by Your Spirit and open that garden within us that has been enclosed.  AMEN
